'Xi' represents happiness or joy and also love and luck. When this character is doubled - only used as an ornamental design motif - it comes to symbolise the coming together of two people, fitting neatly with the Chinese belief that happiness comes in pairs.

This is a popular ginger jar design, traditionally given as a wedding gift to represent a happy marriage. The coral/red colour of this jar is especially auspicious as red is, in itself, a symbol of luck and joy.
