Choosing your shade size: Regular or Large?

Regular shades suit most of our ginger jar bases and give a compact, balanced look.

Large shades offer a broader look & are one inch larger in both bottom diameter & slant height. They are a good choice for a larger room or when your lamp has plenty of space on a larger piece of furniture.

Two exceptions are:

Our Choi lamp base: choose a Large shade to balance the larger base.

Our Mini Ginger Jar Lamp: choose a Small shade (only available in selected silk fabrics)

How to ensure the perfect fitting lamp shade

As a general guide, the shade should account for at least one-third of the combined height of the lamp & shade. A shade around twice the width of the base at its widest point can provide a useful starting point.

These proportions are a guide. Follow the size recommendation for your particular base & consider the overall look you prefer.

Measure your base

• Height: measure from the surface the lamp stands on to the top of the bulb holder, excluding the bulb.
• Width: measure straight across the front of the base at the widest part of its body, rather than across its footprint.

Measure your shade

• Top diameter: measure straight across the top opening.
• Bottom diameter: measure straight across the bottom opening.
• Slant height: measure along the sloping side, from the top rim to the bottom rim.
• Vertical height: measure straight down between the top and bottom rim levels.

Checking your shade fitting

Our standard fitting

Our lamp bases have an E27 bulb holder.

Our standard shades use a Slip-Uno fitting. The shade sits below the bulb and is secured by the lamp holder’s retaining ring. The bulb then screws into place.

The fitting rings on our Regular, Large & XL shades have an inside diameter of 4 cm.

Using a shade with another lamp base

Narrower bulb holders: an appropriate adapter ring can reduce the shade’s fitting-ring diameter.

Harp fittings: our shades are not designed for lamps with a harp. An alternative fitting arrangement may be possible, so contact us before ordering.

Clip-on shades: our clip-on shades are compatible with an E14 candle bulb.

Inside drop measurements

• XL: 5 cm
• Medium and Large: 4 cm
• Small: 3 cm

About our lamps

Handmade character

Our hand-finished pieces may have small variations in the ceramic, brushwork or block print. Vintage pieces may also show signs of age. These details are part of their handmade character and help make each piece unique.

The unglazed rim

Ginger jars have an unglazed rim beneath the lid, which is part of the traditional firing process. If you would like advice on cleaning or caring for this area, please contact us.

Adjusting the lid

The lamp neck allows the lid to be realigned if it has moved during transit. Contact us for guidance on adjusting your particular lamp.

A Care card is included with each of our lamp orders. Please refer to it for any guidance on cleaning and re-positioning, if necessary, or contact us directly.
