Chinoiserie, from the French ‘chinois’, meaning ‘Chinese’, refers to a European artistic style that emerged in the 17th century.
It is characterised by the imitation of Chinese motifs and techniques and was created because of a fascination with Chinese aesthetics. The artistic movement influenced decorative arts, furniture and architecture.
The style blends both Eastern and Western design elements and gained prominence during Europe's burgeoning trade with the East. This led to an increased exposure to the intricacies of Chinese craftsmanship and an appreciation for this new more fanciful aesthetic.
Chinese Ceramics
Central to the chinoiserie movement is the art of Chinese ceramics, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years, to the Tang (618–907 and Ming (1368–1644) dynasties, which marked the beginning of it exports along the Silk Road.
Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain capital of China, has been the heartland of blue and white ceramic production for over a thousand years. These ceramics are celebrated for their delicate artistry, intricate patterns, and harmonious balance of form and function.
