Chinoiserie, from the French ‘chinois’, meaning ‘Chinese’, refers to a European artistic style that emerged in the 17th century.
It is characterised by the imitation of Chinese motifs and techniques & was created because of a fascination with Chinese aesthetics. The artistic movement influenced decorative arts, furniture & architecture.
The style blends both Eastern & Western design elements & gained prominence during Europe's burgeoning trade with the East. This led to an increased exposure to the intricacies of Chinese craftsmanship & an appreciation for this new more fanciful aesthetic.
Chinese Ceramics
Central to the chinoiserie movement is the art of Chinese ceramics, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years, to the Tang (618–907 & Ming (1368–1644) dynasties, which marked the beginning of it exports along the Silk Road.
Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain capital of China, has been the heartland of blue & white ceramic production for over a thousand years. These ceramics are celebrated for their delicate artistry, intricate patterns & harmonious balance of form & function.
